◆ Materials
Porcelain
Dense and waterproof, and it never needs sealing. Comes in plank formats that read as hardwood without the water worry, which is what we used on the floor in the job below.
Marble and natural stone
Real veining that no printed tile quite matches, and no two walls come out the same. It needs sealing and gentler cleaners, so we favor it on walls and shower surrounds over floors.
Ceramic
Softer and easier on the budget. Good for walls and tub surrounds. We steer away from it on floors that take heavy traffic, where it chips sooner than porcelain.
Glass and stone mosaic
Accent bands, framed inserts and niche backs. A little goes a long way, and it is usually the detail people notice first when they walk in.
Pebble and river rock
Shower floors, mainly. All those grout lines give you grip underfoot, and the small format follows the slope to the drain in a way large tile cannot.
HEATED FLOORS
We install electric floor heat using the Schluter Systems Ditra-Heat membrane. The heating cable clips into the membrane rather than sitting loose in mortar, so one layer does two jobs: it warms the floor, and it uncouples the tile from the subfloor beneath it so seasonal movement does not crack your grout. Set it on a programmable thermostat and the floor is warm before you are.
